The blood cells called Platelets (the name is due to their shape) mediate clotting and repair in damage involving blood vessels. In addition to this important function of haemostasis they have a wider role in that they can, at sites of injury or inflammation, mediate the actions of other immune-response cells and drive a healing response. The preparation of a platelet-rich serum from a patient’s own blood sample is an increasingly popular drug-free method of stimulating repair in injury to joints and soft tissue.

This exciting one-day course covers the point-of-treatment collection, and preparation, of PRP and highlights its safe and effective use in intra-articular and peri-articular pathologies. Led by Podiatrist Independent Prescriber Martin Harvey, who collaborated in research in 2007 and 2008 with USA based companies who were developing collection and preparation kits for the international market, the current course is supported by one of the UK’s principal manufacturers of collection and preparations kits.

Using nothing more complex than a small benchtop centrifuge, the practitioner, after collecting the blood by simple venepuncture, can prepare and administer the resulting platelet-rich serum safely and without recourse to pharmacological medicines. Podiatrists with an LA certificate do not require further annotations to be trained in and use this useful technique.  The procedure is covered as prolotherapy by the Institutes band 4 insurance for appropriately trained members and fellows with LA certification.

Martin Harvey, PGCert, BSc, MInstChP, MCPodS

Martin has been at the forefront of developing soft tissue injection therapy in Podiatry for more than a decade. He regularly uses and teaches the use of not only Dermal fillers but also injectable innovations such as PRP, steroid injection therapy, prolotherapy, hyaluronic acid agents and botulinum toxins. As one of the early supplementary prescribers in UK podiatry, he was closely involved in developing independent prescribing, working with the Department of Health and the National Prescribing Centre plus UK Universities. As a registered now fully independent prescriber, he can share his detailed pharmacological understanding in a readily comprehensible fashion that helps delegates to gain the effective knowledge they require to be safe and effective users of these potent agents.

Martin introduced the first such courses for podiatrists nearly ten years ago.
