This course is open to all HCPC registered chiropodists or podiatrists, physiotherapists, doctors, nurses, chiropractors with Local Anaesthesia certification

 

About the course

The local anaesthetic course is designed to provide practical experience in a full range of local and regional block techniques. Focusing on the Anatomy, pharmacology, safety and technical aspects of local anaesthesia, the course will equip the Podiatrist with the skills needed to practice using this valuable modality widening scope of practice.

Demonstration of full ankle blocks will be included

The course will cover the pharmacology of local anaesthetics available to POM-A registered podiatrists, revise digital blocks and introduce the podiatrists to the practicalities of tibial, saphenous, deep peroneal, superficial peroneal and sural blocks.

The LA qualified podiatrist should be able to safely inject tibial and ankle blocks and build on their experience in their own practice. The principles of field and popliteal blocks should be understood and form the basis for further training/mentoring as required.

Conditions course can treat

Regional anaesthesia/analgesia for procedures performed in soft tissue surgery.

Tutors

Bill Liggins, FInstChP, BSc (Hons)

Having qualified as a Podiatrist in Birmingham Bill was engaged by a number of NHS hospitals and Trusts including Dudley, Coventry and Walsall, whilst following higher training in Podiatric Surgery. He attained Fellowship with the Podiatry Association, and was registered as a Podiatric Surgeon in 1983. He completed a BSc(Hons) in Health Sciences in 1991 and in the following year was appointed senior lecturer in Podiatry at the West Midlands School of Podiatry as a secondment from the NHS. He maintained clinical activities part time during this period and returned to the NHS as Consultant Podiatric Surgeon in 1994. He enjoyed private practice privileges at BUPA Parkway Hospital, Leicester Nuffield Hospital and the Birmingham BMI Hospitals and still does so at the latter treating ‘Choose and Book’ NHS patients as well as private. He studied at Anglia Ruskin University and gained a Dip.Ed. in 2014 and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, a Fellow of the College of Podiatric Surgeons and was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Surgery in 2018.

Married, with two adult children, he lives in Fillongley, a village in Warwickshire. When time allows, his pastimes include theatre, opera and walking. He studied British Medieval History at Sheffield University in 2015/2016 and gained an MA, majoring in the 100 Years War.

 

Martin Harvey, PGCert, BSc, MInstChP, MCPodS, CFPodM

Tutor Martin Harvey is a podiatrist independent prescriber who qualified some ten years ago in the use of BTX-A for aesthetic purposes, and who went on to extend its use into applications in his podiatry clinics. His current professional roles include consultant privileges at two major midland hospitals, a primary care practice, a member of the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulation Agency register of external experts, membership of Department of Health committees on subjects that include controlled drugs, and Chair of the National Executive Council of the Institute of Chiropodists and Podiatrists.

Martin introduced the first such courses for podiatrists nearly ten years ago.

This course is held at The Wiggin training centre at Sir Robert Peel Hospital, Mile Oak, Tamworth B78 3NG.

There is on-site parking available (car park charges apply) and the Hospital is very conveniently located some 3 minutes journey from Junction 10 of the M42 motorway via the A5 bypass, making it an easily accessible location from the M6, M5, A5 as well as Tamworth mainline railway station and Birmingham international airport.

Packed lunches can be pre-arranged at extra charge onsite (vegetarian options if required).
