About the course

This is an intensive one day workshop providing an introduction to clinical neurology and basic neuroanatomy. Learn about some of the neurological conditions that can affect the lower limb and leave with the skills to immediately undertake a full neurological assessment of the lower limb in your clinic/workplace.

This course is suitable for any health practitioner who has an interest in neurology and/or has patients with neurological conditions.

Learning outcomes:

  • A basic understanding of clinical neurology and neuroanatomy
  • An introduction to neurological conditions relevant to foot health
  • The ability to undertake a full neurological assessment of the lower limb

Morning: Theory

  • Definitions
  • Components and Organisation of the Nervous System
  • Basic Clinical Diagnostic Principles
  • Neurological Conditions relevant to Foot Health

Afternoon: Practical

Learn how to carry out a full neurological assessment of the lower limb.

Note: For podiatrists who already have this knowledge there may be an opportunity to discuss patient case studies to help them to:

  • detect the presence of a neurological condition
  • develop appropriate treatment plans

Attendees should leave with a greater understanding of neurological conditions, and be able to adapt this knowledge in order to maintain the foot health of patients with these conditions.

About the tutor

Shelagh qualified in podiatry in 2011 from New College Durham. In 2014 she studied Clinical Neurology at University of Sheffield. Shelagh runs a private podiatry clinic specialising in patients with neurological conditions.

Shelagh has been practising reflexology since 2001 and has taught the ITEC diploma in Reflexology for 3 years.
